HOW COME SAMMY SO DUNCEY?

Twenty five years ago the Telephone Service of Trinidad and Tobago phone directory had one listing for a Special Education school. Today there are exactly nine (9) schools listed that cater to children with learning difficulties, slow learners and disabilities like, down syndrome, dyslexia, autism and brain damage.

Lately, the demand for places in Special Education schools has been on overflow with some schools having a waiting list of potential students.
Why so many; now?

LET'S SPECULATE

One theory is that the evolution of our culture and the lifestyle of an average Trinbagonian is directly causing this undesirable phenomenon. We have developed a culture of "immediate gratification" and a propensity to party which "naturally" means the use of alcohol, cigarettes and illicit drugs.

Go to any big fete, anytime of the year, and  you will see how a cross section of our society really live. Excesses are the order of the day and it all starts at a younger and younger age. Add to that mixture, the affect on our digestive systems from eating a wide variety of processed foods and meats that can potentially affect our genes. The conclusion is that our lifestyle without question contributes significantly to the high demand for Special Education our society today.

DID YOUR LIFESTLYE AFFECT YOUR CHILD?

We could examine both parents lifestyles prior to the conception of the child but does it really matter at this point.  A more empowering question is: How do you know if your child is affected?  Children with learning difficulties are not easily diagnosed because most of them look perfectly normal. It is only in cases of severe disability that it becomes obvious that the child has learning challenges.

SO HOW WOULD YOU KNOW FOR SURE?

Well, unless your child shows a cluster of specific symptoms and is professionally assessed by a qualified psychologist; you may never know.
In many cases, children are so behind in mastering simple academic tasks that it becomes obvious.  They are called "duncey" and "stupid" and must endure the ridicule of there family, friends and classmates.   This emotional pain a parent experience is self-inflicted but its our children who are experiencing an entirely different lifestyle.

The challenge is to understand your child's learning style and to be able to identify the symptoms associated with learning difficulties.   Our free report  was compiled to help you to better understand and make an unqualified assessment of your child's learning abilities.
